December

Cultured Purls Guild Meeting, December 12, 2006—Annual Holiday Party

The meeting started at 5:30 p.m. with a buffet of appetizers and desserts. The formal meeting started at 7:08 p.m. Bonnie presided as the only attending officer.

Attendance:
The meeting was attended by 48 members and two visitors. Our visitors were Nicole, who works at the Gifted Purl as a sock instructor, and Turid’s mother who was visiting from Norway.

Treasurer’s Report
• Bonnie gave the Treasurer’s report. Our beginning balance was $1490.16 with $525.91 in expenses for gifts for the party. This leaves an ending balance of $964.25.
• Currently we have a paid membership of 80.
• Dues for 2007 are $15 and must be paid by February 28.

Charity knitting
No charity items were collected today due to Peggy’s absence.

Upcoming Events
Bonnie announced some upcoming events.
• Thursday, Dec. 14: Knitting night at the CL Library, 7–9 p.m.
• Saturday, Jan. 6 and Sunday, Jan. 7 Mosaic Yarn Studio in Des Plaines is holding its Sock Knitters Dream Sale.
• Helga brought in flyers about the Janesville Area Knitting Guild’s Knit-In Feb. 8–9
• The Fold in Marengo will hold an open house on New Year’s Day.
• There will be no 4th Tuesday Knit and Chat meeting this month due to Christmas
• The first regular meeting of 2007 will be Tuesday, Jan. 8. Dawn announced we may have a guest speaker to announce plans for the Fiber Fest to be held at the Dole Mansion in July.
• The first board meeting for new officers and board members will be held on the third Tuesday in January.

Survey
A member survey distributed. Any member that did not turn it in at the meeting should give it to an officer or board member as soon as possible.

Elections were held. Our new officers and board for 2007 are:

Knitting Challenge
Bonnie thanked all that participated in this year’s knitting challenge and presented the entries. Three guild members judged the entries. The winners were:
Most creative: Fabric bowl by Lisa
Best use of material: Fabric and plastic bag tote bag by Karen E.

Gift Exchange and Guild Gift Distribution
Those participating in the gift exchange used Dawn’s knitting poem to exchange gifts, and all present received a gift from the Guild.

Thanks to Peggy for buying and wrapping all the gifts and to Peggy’s daughter for delivering them to the church.

Show and Share
Bonnie presided as members showed off finished (and almost finished) projects.

November

The meeting was called to order at 7:20 by Karen H, the President.

We had several new members in attendance: Laura from Algonquin, Sherry and her daughter Brandy from Crystal Lake, Terry from Crystal Lake, and Turid from Norway (and Crystal Lake for now). Three were from the knit out and have joined.

Barb brought treats and some were left from the weekend retreat.

We have had 9 new members since October which brings our total to 80.

Peggy was absent so there was no reading of the minutes. The treasurer reported that we had a beginning balance of $1490.16, with expenses of $525.91 for the holiday party, leaving a balance of $964.25.

Charity items turned in by: Patty - 7 baby hats, Karen - 1 baby hat, Helga - 1 baby hat, Dawn - 1 baby hat.

Newsletter items are due by November 20th for the upcoming newsletter. Please email submissions to Marie D.

The new by-laws were introduced. A motion was made by Pat and seconded by Helga that we accept the new by-laws as a complete document. A quorum was present and all who voted, voted yes and the motion passed.

The group's first retreat was held the previous weekend of November 10-12 with 17 attendees, in New Glarus WI. They visited woolen mills, yarn shops, and an exhibit on Elizabeth Zimmerman. All who went said they had a great time.

The knit-out had 20 non-members in attendance with 15 members attending to assist non-knitters.

Mosaic Yarns in Des Plaines and Sunflower Sampling in Crystal Lake will be having sales the weekend of November 18.

There will be a knitting challenge for the holiday party in December. You can find a new unusual material to knit a project and present it to the group.

The holiday party will be starting at 5:30 on December 12 at the church. People with their last names starting in A to L will be bringing appetizers and M to Z desserts. An optional gift exchange will take place with gifts costing $10. The election of next years officers and board members will also take place this evening.

The class for the evening was intarsia taught by Marie D.

October

 

Karen H opened the meeting on 10/10/06 at 7:05 p.m.

 

We had a record number of visitors tonight, four of which became new members. We had Sharyn from Cary, Susan from Burton's Bridge (came after seeing our website), Lisa from McHenry, Erica from McHenry who just moved here from Ohio and also found us from our website, Meghan from Cary, Patricia from McHenry, Terri from McHenry, and Minnie's sister visiting from Germany. Total of 8 visitors tonight.
The number of members is 72 as of tonight.


We want to thank Linda for bringing her homemade dessert and Peg for bringing "store bought" cookies.


Treasurer's Report: $1407.24 is our balance in our account per Bonnie.


Charity: We were fortunate to have quite a few items brought in for Centegra Hospital-our 2006 Charity.

Items were as follows:
2 baby hats from Linda
1 baby hat and one chemo hat from Dawn
3 pink baby hats and 2 blue baby hats from Virginia K.
3 baby hats from Bonnie
3 baby hats and a beautiful pink baby sweater from Luz

 

Don't forget to join the "Knit Out" being held at the Crystal Lake Library. It will be held on Sunday, Oct.15th from 1:00-5:00 p.m. in their basement meeting room. Come and help teach someone to knit.
Bring some of your handmade knitted items to display. Our guild will supply free of charge needles and yarn for anyone that shows up and wants to learn to knit. We had 60 people that came to learn to knit last year! We will also offer door prizes for our members that show up and also people coming to learn to knit.


The Crystal Lake Library is trying something new for knitters. It will be only for the months of Sept., Oct., and Nov. on the first Thursday of each of those months at 7:00 p.m. in the basement meeting room.
Again, if someone wants to learn to knit or just come and knit they can do so.
October 17th is the meeting for board members only.


Don't forget to join us on our first knitting retreat, November 10-12.
Information is going to be sent out to each member this coming week.
You have to sign up and get your room by October 20th. Please note that we have changed the class taken at the Woolen Mill from the wool dying class (too caustic!) to beginning lace. We have now approximately
14-16 ladies going. It should be really fun for all! Information is also on our web site.


Don't forget that nominations for officers and board members will be brought up at our November Meeting. Please nominate anyone you feel would do a good job.

September

 

Tonight before the meeting we had a Pot Luck Dinner. Members brought a dish to pass to open our "knitting season". The food was all wonderful and heartily enjoyed by all of us!
Karen opened the meeting at 7:05 p.m.

We had two new visitors tonight.
Luz's sister from Reno, NV and Lisa from McHenry. Welcome!
The total number of members is now 68.
Treasurer's Report from Bonnie: Total Balance in our checking account comes to $1,453.96.
Charity Contributions: Cindi-6 baby hats; Karen E.- 3 Chemo Hats, 3 baby Hats; Barb-Baby Blanket, 5 baby hats, 7 IV Holders, 7 Chemo Hats; Evelyn-5 Baby Hats, 5 pairs of Baby Booties.
We want to thank each and everyone of our members for being so generous with their time in knitting all these wonderful items for the Centegra Hospital!
Our thanks to editor Marie and members that contributed to our newsletter that just went out. The next newsletter will be coming out at the end of November or beginning of December.
The Felted Slipper workshop was a great success! 14-16 members attended and everyone showed us their work. (Photos online at Guild Photos) Thanks to Andrea for organizing and teaching this workshop for us!

Charity Knitting Update

Note sent by Peggy S:

     "I delivered 4 big bags of baby hats, chemo hats, booties, etc. to Woodstock Centegra Hospital the other day. This time I got to go up to the 3rd floor where the babies were. All the nurses couldn't thank us enough for all the beautiful items. They were so proud as they passed up Centegra in McHenry with a record of 122 babies born last month!! They have gotten the okay also for a big women's center and heart center in Woodstock at the hospital. I also went to the 2nd floor and brought the IV Covers and went to 200West Floor to deliver a bunch of chemo hats, that were also gratefully accepted by the nurses there."

 

 

August

Karen started the meeting at 7:10 p.m. There were 27 attendees tonight.
We had two new visitors; Jean from Crystal Lake, and Joan from Cary.
Dawn stated we have approximately 68 paid members as of this date.
Dawn gave the Treasurer's Report. As of this date we have $1434.24 in our bank account.
We had three knitted baby hats given to our Centegra Hospital Charity.
Two hats were knitted by Sarah, and one was knitted by Linda. We thank you for all your work in making these very cute hats!
Marie stated that deadline for submission for our upcoming newsletter is August 27th. Please take the time to send Marie all your interesting knitting articles and original contributions. The newsletter will be coming out around the first week of September.
Don't forget STITCHES this weekend. A lot of talk carpooling and getting together at STITCHES was heard tonight. Have a great time with the classes and the shopping!
August 27th (Sunday) is the Felted Clog Workshop run by Andrea. It is being held at the Algonquin Township building by Rt. 31 & Rt. 62. It starts at 1:00 p.m.
September 12th is our next regular meeting. To celebrate the start of the "knitting season" we are having a potluck before the meeting. It will start at 5:30 p.m. If you are planning on attending please bring the following:
If your last name starts with: A-G Bring a salad
H-Q Bring a main dish
R-Z Bring a dessert

October 15th (Sunday) is the Knit Out held at the Crystal Lake Library from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Our Guild is holding a two-night retreat on November 10-12th. We will be staying at the Chalet Landhaus Inn, New Glarus, Wisconsin. Room rates are $94/per room plus tax (double occupancy) and have to be held with your credit card. This room rate includes a full hot breakfast buffet daily. On the Saturday we will visit the Blackberry Ridge Woolen Mill located in Mt. Horeb to take a class and tour of the mill and of course do some shopping there, plus other activies to be added. The Guild is holding a block of rooms so get your reservations in early. The phone number to the Inn is 1-800-944-1716. July

Karen opened the meeting at 7:08 p.m. We had three new visitors tonight, all from Crystal Lake. Thanks to Debbie and Minnie for their delicious treats they brought for all of us to enjoy.
Bonnie gave us a balance of $1407.24 in our account for the month.
We had 4 baby hats donated for our Charity project with Centegra Hospital. Thanks to Karen, Sue, and Sara for knitting these pretty hats.
Our next Charity Knitting get together will be held in September at the Fox River Grove Panera Restaurant, Route 22 & Rt.14, from 6:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
The deadline for submission of any articles for our next newsletter is August 26th. Please send any knitting information to Marie who is editor of our newsletter. Hopefully the next newsletter will be coming out at the beginning of September.
Crystal Lake Library has kindly decided to co-sponsor this year's Knit-Out being held Sunday, October 15th from 1-5 p.m. We are able to use the library's room without having to pay for it.
Only two of our members attended the guild picnic held at Turner Camp in Algonquin. The low attendance was blamed on everyone having a busy summer. Thanks to Barb for hosting it.
Future Events: August 4-6 I'd Rather Be Knitting Yarn Shop Sale located in Long Grove, IL.
August 10-13 Stitches Midwest/Rosemont. Since parking is $11/a car try to car pool.
August 16-20, Michigan Fiber Fest
August 27 (Sunday), Our Guild Felted Clog Workshop being held at the Algonquin Village Hall, Rt.31&62 from 1:00 p.m. until ? Andrea is in charge of this workshop. She will be doing a group order with Knit Picks Company. You can place your order for both the yarn and the pattern with Andrea. She has a palette of all the colors of the Peruvian Wool. It is worsted weight wool yarn. You may buy the yarn elsewhere, if you desire.
Tonight's class was headed by Patti. She had two very pretty lace patterns for one of our 5" squares. Thanks to Patti for all here help with this class tonight.
More information to come on our knitting retreat being held for two nights, November 10-12. We will be trying to get some rooms reserved at the Chalet Landhaus Inn, New Glarus, Wisconsin. More information to come as soon as we hear.

The June 13, 2006 meeting of The Cultured Purls Guild was called to order at 7:10 by Karen. We welcomed 5 new visitors, 2 from Crystal Lake, 2 from McHenry and 1 from Cary. Treats were supplied by Helga and Cindy.

The number of members is at 64. There was no treasurer's report given.

Mary Joan turned in 1 IV cover and 3 chemo caps for Charity Knitting.. There will be a Charity Knitting night on Tuesday, June 20 at the Panera Bread store in Fox River Grove from 6:30 to 9:00. You can find patterns on the web site and you can either bring your own yarn or knit from the charity yarn stash.

The newsletter went out the first week in June. Our next newsletter will be in September. Please think about writing an article for the next newsletter.

Karen reported that there were many yarn shops having sales in the past weeks - Gene Ann's, Gifted Purl and the one in Crystal Lake I believe.

 

The Knit in Public that was held on Saturday, June 10 was well attended. We had 9 people in attendance.

April

Karen opened the meeting at 7:10 p.m. on April 11, 2006. She welcomed three new visitors to our meeting. Two of the ladies live in Crystal Lake and one lives in Cary. The total number of attendees tonight was 35. Thanks to Cindy S. for bringing cookies to go with our coffee and tea.
We have one new member sign up, bringing a total paid membership number to 60.

Charity: Patti knitted 9 baby hats and one baby blanket for Centegra Hospital. Kudos to Patti!! Our guild decided to buy some baby yarn for any of our members who would like to make some baby things for our charity. Dawn was kind enough to get the yarn on sale and use her discount at Hobby Lobby. Thanks Dawn! We also have several people that have brought in skeins from their stashes for us to use.

A motion was brought up to buy a swift and ball winder from Debbie and Bonnie. The motion passed unanimously. Later in the meeting Nancy was nice enough to donate a ball winder so all we have to order is the swift. Bonnie will look into pricing and order one. They run around $50.00.

Our newsletter just came out a week ago. It is being organized and written by Marie. Please send or e-mail any great knitting articles or information to Marie. The deadline for the next newsletter will be posted on our website. Thanks to Marie for doing such a great job!

Tonight's instruction was on pattern embossing. Patti was our instructor. Bonnie showed everyone an example (a sweater she had knitted) of pattern embossing that was beautiful. Thanks to Patti for taking the time to help everyone with her instructions, etc.

At the May 9th meeting, the instruction will be on learning Cables.
The instructor will be Kathleen with Minnie helping. The June 13th instruction will be Slip Stitch Mosiac. We need instructors for this.
Please volunteer your expertise.

Please check out our website for all future events coming up. Everyone is getting excited for Stitches Midwest which will again be held in Rosemont this August 10-13. Parking is supposed to be $11/a day per car. Daily admission will be $8 per person, $12 for 2-day passes, or $16 for a 3-day pass. Be sure to sign up EARLY as classes fill up very quickly. March

Karen started the business meeting for Cultured Purls Guild at 7:08 p.m. on March 14, 2006. We had one new person, Sue B from McHenry.

Total attendance for this meeting was 31. Karen thanked Peggy and Helen for bringing "goodies" served with our coffee and tea.

Bonnie/Treasurer gave her report. Beginning balance was $1296.00. An additional amount of $162.00 came in during the last month for a total as of 3/14/06 of $1458.00 in our account. We now have 57 paid members.

Peggy announced we had quite a few charity items donated by our members. Linda F-1 baby hat, Susan R-2 chemo hats, Minnie -6 baby hats. We thank each and every one of you for donating an item!

Our newsletter, coming out at the end of March, will be sent to our web site instead of by regular mail. If you have an interesting article please send it on to Marie, who has kindly volunteered to get the newsletter out.

Dawn mentioned to our new members that we have our library exchange of patterns, books, and magazines for our members. We also have a suggestion box at our monthly meetings.

It was brought up that 4 of our members attended the last knitting night held at the Crystal Lake Library. The last session at the library is Thursday, 3/16 from 7:00 p.m. until closing.

Karen mentioned that Tall Grass Farm is having their annual spring fiber jubilee. It will be held on Saturday, April 1, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Parking is roadside (all four wheels must be off the road). For our next meeting on April 11th, our instructors will teach the embossed stitch. Our thanks to Linda D. for leading our lesson on the Duplicate stitch, along with all her "helpers" for tonight's lesson. Our May meeting will be a lesson on learning to cable.

The meeting was opened by Karen H on 2/14/06 at 7:08 p.m. We had one new visitor tonight.

 

Bonnie D is still collecting our annual dues. The amount for each member for the annual dues is $18.00. Please get these dues in as soon as possible. We now have 53 paid members for 2006.


Charity: The following items were brought in for our Charity Program:
1 Hat from Karen, 1 Hat from Bonnie, 1 Hat from Evelyn, pair of booties from Evelyn and one IV Holder from Evelyn. A big thanks to all for these baby items for Centegra Hospital.


The following dates were mentioned for area shows, bargains, discounts:
Mosaic Yarn Shop/Des Plaines: Fashion Show/$25.00 per person, for more information go to their web site.
Gifted Purl/West Dundee: Feb.26 (Sunday) is a Guild Member Open House.
It will be held from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. There will be refreshments and a discount of 15% for all guild members.
Basket of Stitches/Palatine: All their yarn is 40% off to anyone right now. There is only a 10% guild discount for needles, books, etc.
Quietly Wild/Woodstock: Is going out of business and will have everything discounted starting Feb.28th-various discounts.


Due to it being Valentine's Day, there was no project tonight, but the Friendship Scarves could be continued if desired. We had a lot of people giving help to other members so that was nice.

 

For the March meeting, our project will be learning the Duplicate Stitch as the first of a number of little squares of different techniques throughout the year. For the materials and instructions needed before the March meeting please go to our web site program info page.

January

Karen opened the meeting at 7:10 p.m. We had 9 new visitors. Four ladies from Crystal Lake, two from Cary, two from Huntley, and one from Woodstock. Several of these ladies heard about our Guild from attending the Knit Out at the Crystal Lake Library, read about us in the Herald, took classes from one of our guild members, or through one of our local yarn shops. Word sure gets around!

We are now signing a list when you come in-not just for visitors but for Guild members attending the monthly meetings, just to get to know the numbers of each month. This month we had a total of 45 ladies attend.

We were very lucky to have quite a few baby items donated for our Centegra charity project. The following items were donated in January:
fleeced lined/knitted blanket and a hat - Jacqueline G.
3 baby blankets and a pair of slippers - Barb D.
8 baby hats and 8 pairs of baby booties - Evelyn M. (Peggy's Mom)

Thanks so very much for all these donations-they are much appreciated!

Karen asked everyone to be sure to bring up anything they would like to have taught at any of our upcoming meeting. Since the next monthly meeting falls on Valentine's Day, there will be no official training sessions.  We can continue working on our Friendship scarves together.

Officers and Board members will meet for their first meeting next Tuesday, January 17th, at Barnes and Noble at 7:00 p.m.

Crystal Lake Library is holding knitting meetings on the third Thursday of January, February, and March from 7:00-9:00 p.m.
