Monthly Library Meeting Reviews, 2003

by 2003 President Sherry D

December:

We had a wonderful Xmas party with lots of goodies and food. A special thanks to Nikki for heading up the committee and putting it altogether. Karen H. made a special run to ensure great goody bags - so thanks to her also.

We had election of officers and committee assignments will be in January.

UPDATE on the DALE COLORWORK WORKSHOP

We are all set for our first workshop of the year.
January 17th, 2004
Dale of Norway - Therese Chynoweth
Morning session 10:30 - 1:30 p.m.
Afternoon session 2:30-5:30
LOCATION: Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 27 Three Oaks Road, Cary (The same place Dawn held her felted slipper socks class)

Sign up for morning or afternoon. Cost is $10 for members, $25 for non members.

We will be making a headband in the round: Here is the homework and supply list:

Supplies:

Size 3 or 4 16" circular needle

Size 2 16" circular needle (optional) You may work the facing in the smaller needle and then change to a larger needle. This is done in many Dale of Norway Patterns. It is noted on the instructions when to switch.

4 colors yarn of the same weight (sport weight is preferred)

Cast on 120 stitches in one of the colors. Knit in the round for 1 1/2 inches - stockinette stitch. (That's knit every round.) Purl one (1) round (after this round switch to larger needle if using smaller one for facing). Knit 2 rounds.

Leave on needles and bring to class.

I've taken a class from Terese and she's a great instructor. In her classes you learn by doing - all hands on. Don't be afraid to try - if you need help getting started or need advice please call or ask at the meeting on Tuesday.

We have 5 openings for the a.m. and 14 for the p.m. First come, first serve. I will open to the Barrington Guild next week if we don't fill.

The meeting next Tuesday will be selection of committee chairs, and Beaded Knitting (Kathleen). For beginners it will be Knitting in the Round (great time to learn for the workshop).

As always come at 6:30 for questions and the meeting will start at 7.

Happy Knitting
Sherry

October:

We had a great meeting.

Treasurer - Sherry D has added a new form for reimbursement of expenses. There is room to note the amount and what the money was spent on. There is also a section for approval of payment by the President or Vice President. This should give us a better idea of where the money is being spent and easier to determine what are expenses are for the following year. You can pick up a form at the meeting.

Membership - Welcome to new members Patti K from Gilberts, Lynn Z from Lake in the Hills, and Karen K from Woodstock.

Webmaster - Any photo's for the website contact Dawn A. We are looking for any that were taken at the Knit Out.

Color Knitting on January 17th, 2004.

Stephanie A brought to our attention that we are invited to The Woodstock Weavers Guild who, along with Hollow Tree Spinners, is hosting their 6th Annual Fiber/Textile Show and Sale at the Old Courthouse Arts Center on the historic Woodstock Square, Woodstock, IL. Show entries are welcome from all weavers and spinners. Prizes and awards will be given in five categories, and Best of Show at the discretion of the judge and show committee. You are invited to view the exhibits and see the beauty of hand weaving and hand spun yarn. The show is free. The Show is open Thursday through Saturdays from 11-5 and Sundays from 1-5pm (Thursday, Oct2nd - Sunday October 26, 2003.)

We showed a few finished projects, and had Erica Lee do a workshop on the Seaman Scarf.

July:

Hope you are enjoying your summer. We had a very enjoyable and relaxing meeting last Tuesday.

Everyone brought what they were submitting to the Wisconsin State Fair and what had been submitted in past years.

We learned three ways to do a provisional cast on. And had lots of time to knit and chat.

VOLUNTEERS: TKGA (The Knitting Guild of America) has contacted us to work their booth at Stitches Midwest, August 21--24. When you work at the booth you get free admission to the market (usually costs $6.00 or free when taking classes). The market is wonderful - just a huge assortment of yarns and kits. Right now, it looks like Saturday is the best day for those that were at the meeting. If you are able to help work the booth - please email me in the next two days. They need the names early to enable them to submit for the free admission asap. You can volunteer for any day and I'll let you know what schedule they give us. When working the booth you would just explain what a guild is and hand out flyers - we can hand out our own flyer too. No experience necessary - and knitters are such a friendly group.

Next Month: Entrelac Knitting. Bring two different color yarns (same weight and needles to match, i.e., two worsted weight colors with size seven needles).

September - Beginners: Fixing mistakes, picking up stitches/tinking
Advanced: Cables

October - Erica Lee is back for a workshop on Scarves

Wow - we have a full fall schedule already. I am looking for ideas for November and we are planning for the Xmas party. If you have any ideas for location please let us know. We expect a large group - 40-50 people. As always comments and suggestions are always welcome.

If you haven't been to the meetings in awhile, we hope you will return in fall.

Sherry D

June:

The afghan was presented to Sherry S. for the birth of her baby girl as well as the sunshine club presentation of yarn. Congratulations Sherry!

Web - Dawn now has members finished projects on the web site. If you have pictures send them to Dawn to get them on our site.

Outings - The yarn crawl was enjoyed by all (see newsletter for more info).

Newsletter - Was handed out by Bonnie to all that attended. All others will be mailed to you this week.

State Fair - Remember to work on State Fair submissions, delivery date is July 21. July meeting will discuss "Knitting for the State Fair".

I passed out a survey for members that asked questions about how you feel about meetings and what we have presented this year. Copies will be available at Barnes and Noble and the July meeting. If you have any requests for techniques for our meetings please let me know.

The Windy City Knitting Guild of Chicago is holding a workshop with Joan Schrouder. Joan is a teacher and designer from Eugene, Oregon. The workshop is downtown on July 11-13. You can obtain a copy on their website at www.windycityknittingguild.com

Stitches Midwest is August 21-24 at Pheasant Run, St. Charles, IL. Our Guild will be helping to man the booth for TKGA (The Knitting Guild of America). We are the only guild that has been selected so far. We will need volunteers to work the booth at the Market. Details will follow as available. You can still sign up for classes.

We had a wonderful presentation by Erica Lee on Edgings. We learned 4 edgings: The band, picot, fringe (on the side) and ruffle. It was a great presentation with a lot of wonderful information. I will have the extra handouts available at the next meeting.
